Listening to Old Love Songs

Hear
“you’re nobody til someone loves you”
Lament of the rejected child.
“I’d rather go blind than have you walk away from me”
Lament of the neglected child.
“can’t live, if living is without you”
Lament of the abandoned child.
Love songs sung
white-knuckled
on our knees.

Hear
Coltrane’s saxophone
refrain “a love supreme”
“a love supreme”
sung big as the sky
notes round as the planet
call us
to the love
that makes the grass grow.
Love mirrored
in each other’s faces
to remind us, joined
we can wipe our tears with flowers.
